the german project THE_EMPATH has been active since 1993 and he has released several cd-rs and various compilation tracks. both calm and powerful, his track is a beautiful introduction to miwak twelve;
melodic electronica with a krautrock feel combined with a pumping, sub-bass beat. SLAM52 is a rising young star, presenting his blend of vicious dubstep, dark amen breaks and industrial mayhem with 'frosd'.
SOMATIC RESPONSES, from wales, do not require a grand announcement to hymen records - as they have been with us since the beginning; 'takayama' combines sharp electro beats with relaxed soundscapes and energetic sequential work. while don hill from chicago has been creating dark ambient music under the moniker porteur de l'image since 1998, he recently formed MILLIPEDE. 'concevoir' is a great example for what this project is up to: beat-oriented, dark, harsh idm - a soundtrack for contemplation... watch out for his release on hymen records in autumn 2009! DEFRAG (an acronym of defragmentation) is
active both as a musician and sound designer. his music features elements of jungle, industrial and hard noise. 'the old growth' displays powerful breakbeats, mighty pulsing bass and threatening
soundtrackish synth layers - a mesmerizing mixage! TONIKOM's 'the source' features a d'n'b basis enriched with angelic choirs, an exotic theme and well-placed samples - hello! 'sunurb' is a captivating dark
ambient piece that only NEBULO can create - thomas p. leads the listener into a parallel world where everything is possible, nothing is real, and everything might happen... DERU is benjamin wynn from los
angeles who has released music with ghostly international, merck, neo ouija, and mille plateaux, amoungst others. his music is best described as an amalgamation of hip-hop, electronica and idm, perfectly
demonstrated on 'between you and me'. go dance on the volcano, as long as it is not too late! thus spoke david thrussell... 'the hostman of tyne' - a heavy distorted electro tune by BLACK LUNG. enjoy, while you
can! LOWFISH, a.k.a. toronto's gregory de rocher, has released six albums and many singles on some of independent dance music's most influential labels - he has also charted in north america and is noted
for his punishing sets of live electronics. his clinical production style is both very modern and built on the dna of early new wave/idm. sometimes dark, often melodic and multi-layered. 'wreckage' is pure
intelligent electro, fast and impulsive - let go! and keep moving with HPC's 'phoenix', where hard beats are balanced with saturnine ambiance - another great strike from the norwegian project. ACCESS TO
ARASAKA from rochester, n.y. is a one man project who has released several albums in digital format (so far). 'xt10.20zp9' is excellent electronica, combining densely-layered atmospheres with complex,
intelligent beatwork and massive bass. since hymen records' early years daniel myer a.k.a. ARCHITECT has known how to trigger a lower lip response - 'awake' features complex, dense beats while keeping clicks, cuts, synths and voices together. there is no other! DRYFT is a solo project of former gridlock member mike cadoo, who is active since 1999 under that moniker. on 'vector step' melodious keyboard layers are pushed by varied rhythmic patterns that induce relief and tension. cd1 is concluded by ben HECQ's 'sleep through the day', a mellow and slightly melancholic combination of piano tunes, field recordings and
gentle background strings...

cd2 opens up with COMBUSTION (marcelo baldin), an art director and sound designer from brazil. 'building the house of vanity' is a soulful slow tune featuring gentle guitar work and caro roth's feeling vocals.
'arrive with eyes ablazed', a slow distorted electronica jewel shows GINORMOUS' ability to melt tension and relaxation into one emotion. david thrussell appears for the second time, now as SNOG, introducing a
melancholic view about 'the end of the world' as he sees it - backwards guitars, acoustic drums and thrussell's distinctive voice result in a pop song with a spike only he is able to create. dave tipper and mike
wallis are active as CRUNCH since 2000. for miwak twelve they chose a remix by vent (dan havers a.k.a. dj samurai / dc breaks and sam ashwell a.k.a. diagoro / abstrakt knights). the vent mix of 'karot' - a bassy
electro shuffle enriched with clicks, cuts and chopped voices. 'breakstuff' is a collaboration between MAD EP AND BRYCE BEVERLIN II, a multidisciplinary artist residing in minneapolis where he explores
various forms of art including free improvisational music, film and video, poetry, public/private installation, and conceptual composition. this alienated hip hop based track forces movement - in many different
directions... 'sacrifice' is a post-rock electronica anthem by KEEF BAKER, where symphonic keyboard layers and distorted guitars amalgamate into an enthralling wall of sound. his face and his real name are
hidden but even more interesting questions arise when somebody attempts to get into BLACKFILM's complicated music structures. starting off in a somewhat soundtrack perspective, blackfilm slowly builds up an
incredibly dark environment, in which fearsome ambiences co-exist with film-noir references. evolving from downtempo electronic music to orchestral paroxysms and, insanely, passing from down-pitched
nothingness to frozen urban landscapes - it becomes impossible to resist. let yourself sink in the abyss... together with slam52, KARSTEN PFLUM represent the cutting-edge of danish electronic music, paying
with his music a tribute to the glorious times of idm, without losing the focus on the future of the genre. recently he became addicted to the wobble sounds of dubstep, and with 'capstone switch' he even
includes a pinch of slight breakcore - fast and dark, you will love it! swiss project ABS6 uses his influences from d'n'b to hip hop to breakcore without limiting himself to one style. 'premiers traitements'
is a great mixage of euphonic synth textures and click'n'cut broken beats. with 'the bard', reid dunn a.k.a. WISP presents a beautiful straight but complex track where well-placed drum and bass patterns
meet orchestral samples - the mood is atrabilious and sanguine at the same time. JEROME CHASSAGNARD features a soothing piece of electronica with a lovely melody line. 'timeless travelers' - a wonderful sound experience. a friendly visitor from ant-zen: MIKA GOEDRIJK. the belgian one man project known from his 'pellicules' release explores the borders between tribalistic body music and electronic sound
explorations with impulsive and dark 'sore eyes'. a slow gloomy darkhop tune is showcased by s.talada a.k.a. MARCHING DYNAMICS - a moving, actuating, threatening almighty bomb! 'intercession' by ORPHX from canada, a techno-infused rhythmic dance track, displays the ability of c.sealey and r.oddie to give extensive structures a value. electronica pushed towards the dancefloor... did we say dancefloor? BIT SHIFTER explores high-energy, low-bit music composed and performed on a nintendo gameboy. the result is an unapologetically fun foray into an evocative and distinctive sound set, executed on a console generally misperceived as being technically limited. the lo-fi disco burner 'easy prey' is a perfect example of how to get this console to groove! 'back in town' by DEAD HOLLYWOOD STARS leads the listener to a cotton field in the mississippi delta with shuffling drum beats and acoustic slide guitars - but it might be possible an u.f.o. has landed just as alan lomax has made this recording for the library of congress, because
there are irritating synthetic sounds here which definitely do not belong to the delta blues... 'jailbait rock' by END adds the big twang to this compilation - just exactly what was missing - fast, dirty electrock'n'roll! and our party has come to an end with TWENTY KNIVES - after entering the 'royal vomitorium' and being attacked by a phalanx of beats, superposed melodies and hysterical classic-influenced e-piano there is nothing left to say, except for: change to cd1 and start all over again!

bumper double cd collection that had me chomping at the bit before the wrapper came off, such is my love of this label; and what a pleasure it is from start to finish. basically a celebration of all that is good in contemporary electronic music, hymen never fail to challenge and explore the sense at every available opportunity. safe to say there isn’t much that this label releases that doesn’t scream ‘quality’.  this release is no exception. beautifully opened by a relatively unknown act to me (and one i may add i will be hunting down shortly) ‘empath’ who draws on deep ebbs and flows with a tremendous sense of space complimented with harps towards its moody climax.  once again hymen introduce me to something outstanding. there are some familiar faces upon this release and yet again all the songs performed are worthy of the accolades they surely deserve as artists.  with a release as lengthy as this there simply isn’t enough space to give this album justice. i won’t play around with genre terminology tagging everything lazily as ‘idm’ and such like, because i am sure that is getting a bit dull when dropped into the equation. besides, if you know hymen as a label, you know what they are about.  if you have never heard of them, then believe me wholeheartedly when i say that they stand for nothing short of intelligent electronics, deep emotions and complex artists that throw programming wizardry around as if it was merely a trifle. there really are some outstanding numbers on this release and its gonna be hard to pick some out but i guess i had better, with no disrespect to any other artist on the album. take ‘snog’ who stand out like a sore thumb with his dry vocal stylings and rock-tronic sensibilities, right through to ‘keef baker’ with his drifting ambiences and whispering vocals to gentle pads and noisy swamp like breaks, onto the dark, brooding dub like qualities of the immense ‘blackfilm’, talented as hell and along with ‘tonikom’ yet another of the talented females out there that this scene sorely lacks. i could really go on all day and believe me its hard not to; splendid. vital weekly
teknoir - the anniversary compilation from german label hymen records from 1999, still stands as one of my all time favorite electronic music compilations. the span of expressions on that particular compilation was remarkable and made the whole trip through the 2+ hours of playing time a true pleasure. now ten years later, the time has come to celebrate the twelfth anniversary of hymen records. and then, what has happened in the meantime? stylishly there is a change from the dark and overall harsh expression on teknoir to this new double disc-compilation titled "miwak twelve". as the long slowly soundscapes of opening track on "miwak twelve" titled "at the heart of it all" from artist calling himself the_empath sets in, the listener soon gets the idea that there is quite a change in comparison to the early years of the label, circa teknoir. the tone on the opening track is tranquilizing and dreamful in its nature with downbeat rhythms and beautiful guitar strums weaved into otherworldly soundscapes. many other great moments are found on the "miwak twelve"-compilation: post-rock-inspired electronica from nebulo on "sunurb", ambient-oriented contributions from artists such as dryft, hecq and the slightly more glitch-oriented access to arasaka. chillout electronics from combustion and jerome chassagnard to the more upfront and harsh moments from projects such as artists like hpc and mad ep vs. bryce beverlyn II. othercool moments comes from lowfish with his minimalist technoism and my favorite moment on the entire compilation, being christen plum and his excellent darkside-oriented breakbeat-track capstone switch. so many styles on the compilation, though quite a few contributions floats in the breakbeat-oriented spheres. miwak twelve is a superb and highly entertaining compilation ranking on the same quality level as the teknoir-compilation. unquestionably this will end up as one of this year's greatest compilations of electronic music, if you ask me! do you know what you have done in 1997? i remember this year very well because a lot of changes happened in my life. i am sure that some honest, crazy and enthusiastic guys from a small village in the south of germany remember this year also very well, because in this year they founded one of the most important and influential record label for experimental electronic music. i am talking about the founding of hymen records twelve years ago – their immovable aim to release new music with new concepts is nonesuch and changed the musical landscape and a whole scene. far away from the mainstream they created a platform for unusual and seminal music. it would be time to say “thank you hymen!” - but they were faster, they say thank you with a wonderful birthday present to us by releasing “miwak twelve”.a double cd in a deluxe package represents thirty-three tracks by hymen artists. this collection is amazing – it couldn't be done better – a perfect collection of the sound this amazing label stands for. its like that the guys of hymen looked in the mirror and asked themselves what their label is standing for – the answer must be this exceptional and impressing collection of music! sensational – not a perfect ten a perfect twelve – thank you and happy birthday hymen records!

gothtronic
hymen records celebrates its twelve year existence with the double compilation cd miwak twelve which features 33 tracks of well known and lesser known artists from the idm and industrial crossover genre. the two cd’s also feature acts who make dubstep, ambient, breakbeat or electro. familiar names like somatic responses, black lung, architect, snog, dead hollywood stars, orphx and hecq can be found next to completely new names like slam52 who impress with massive industrial dubstep breaks. also impressive is the melodic kraut ambient from the empath, which are unknown to me as well but seem to exist since 1993. breakbeats are featured from defrag, wisp, abs6, hpc and tonikom. adventurous electro techno is featured from somatic responses, orphx, black lung and mika goedrijk while end even adds a dose of rock ‘n roll. cinematographic ambient idm sounds are featured from hecq, blackfilm, nebulo, jerome chassagnard, keef baker and marching dynamics. uptempo idm techno from lowfish, millipede, karsten pflum, access to arasaka, dryft, twenty knives, ginormous and architect. miwak twelve perfectly demonstrates the variety of the hymen label and like the label is used to, it also offers new idm projects a chance. there is much beauty to be found on these two discs for whoever likes adventurous electronic music. sound proector
on the occasion of the 12th anniversary of its creative work german label hymen prepared and released the double compilation miwak twelve consisting of 33 compositions by musicians both who already had releases on label and friendly teams. this compilation was released in collection sixpanel envelope covered with original minimalistic photos with information about location of all members of the project. we may say at once that after all previous released compilations label hymen successfully avoided self-repetition and created the new sound palette. here the listener is expected to hear more melodies, various mood changes, but the main is how it all sounds. nobody has ever heard such sound with hymen. with the first incredibly beautiful and deepening track of the_empath "at the heart of it all" one can be very much surprised and maybe even not believe that this is music of the german label. too checked, acurate, balanced sound, brutality, dirtiness of sound and deliberate primitivism in information transmission have disappeared. emphasis is really made at melodiousness, arrangement and lightness of music itself. but you can make sure that this is really another side of hymen listening to "frosd" by slam52 and "concevoir" by millipede - here there will be more than enough rhythmical technoid structures already met in compilation masonic. composition by somatic responses "takayama" impressed greatly, there is such a feeling that there plays merry club track in electro style with ambient final part moving far away. further our mood will be ruled by compilation's created according to intricate system. two dark tracks go on end: "the old growth" by defrag and "the source" by tonikom. both tracks are obviously in the same style. they are changed by very beautiful pair by nebulo and deru: "sunurb" and "between you and me" supplementing each other. this very moment on compilation is very attractive and authentic to modern label's sounding. the next voluminous connecting link starts with tracks by black lung, lowfish, hpc, access to araska - "the hostmen of tyne", "wreckage", "phoenix", "xt10.20zp9" and it accordingly finishes with "awake" by architect. i can't say that i've heard something new for me, i just felt emotional attarction of metallized music roots. the next magnificent fragment of the compilation "vector step" by project dryft is a very sensitive and bright sketch from a dream. the first side of miwak twelve is finished by hecq with track "sleep through the day". it's kind evening music which ideally fits for the first part's ending. the second part starts with extremely beautiful composition by combustion - "building the house of vanity", the amazing voice belongs to caro roth, this project is not familiar to me and i don't know this vocalist, but what these guys made is the true authentic pearl. ginormous, snog and crunch presented here the earnest compositions strengthening their positions of serious musicians on electronic scene. composition "sacrifice" by keef baker is one more bright godsend in the compilation. maybe this is one of the best tracks of the double release, maybe this is one of the best musician's compositions. it starts with running piano keyboards parties and right in a moment it drives crazy everybody who hears it. it seems that the whole world around stops and one can hear distinctly all that lives inside us. emotions and feelings really overflow you, and music turns into the swift sound fall. some more important moments. the compilation consists of a wide spectrum of styles, there are at least 10 of them here or maybe more - idm, electro, dnb, ambient, dubstep, easy, breakcore, hip-hop and others. because of this very diversity all sounds very slightly and freely. concerning discoveries, new names and godsends - there are enough of them all in this compilation. and music of the young musicians is far from being worse, in some places it's even more interesting than headliners' music. there is no sense to enumerate all inetersting projects - better to listen on your own and choose those who caught you and made you interested. miwak twelve is a serious, worthy present of the label to its fans, in musical collection this release of no doubt won't be unneccessary. (raven c)

connexion bizarre
time flies. it's already been twelve years since hymen records first started out, and although as a label it has always seemed more interested in progressing rather than looking back, they have decided to celebrate this fact by releasing a double disc compilation album. checking the track listing one will notice both familiar names and a couple of new ones - perhaps the aim of this compilation is not only to look back at their impressive back catalogue, but also to reveal what is yet to come... unfortunately i don't have enough space to write about all the gems so i'll just focus on some of the highlights. disc one kicks off gently with an enchanting track by the_empath where warm pads fade in and out and are accompanied by some chopped-up beat work and the dreamy atmosphere manages to put the listener in a peaceful state of mind. but "miwak 12" has a lot more to offer besides pretty ambiances. the second track launches into some serious dubstep- influenced beat work, followed by a very melodic track by somatic responses which, after a couple of minutes of funky electro rhythms, breaks down until just one lonely synth remains. halfway through disc one i come across the beautiful track "sunurb" by nebulo with several layers of manipulated tape loops creating an abstract world of sonic sadness. but before we can get too sentimental, black lung sets the record straight with some heavily distorted electro grooves. the final track on the first disc is a haunting soundtrack by hecq, yet another step into the ambient direction he took with his album "night falls". on disc two, "combustion' brings us an experimental trip hop track and the sliced up vocals by caro roth mix very well with the guitars and beats. another smooth beginning which is again followed up by a harder edged tune by ginormous featuring some ferocious synth work. a few tracks into the album keef baker presents his new trademark mix of electronics and distorted guitar grooves. by now both discs seem to revolve around the constantly shifting dynamics between each tune and quite often within a song. disc two continues with a couple more beat-oriented tracks and even some full-on 8-bit party madness by bit shifter. next up are the dead hollywood stars: dark washes of sound move around slowly while a jazzy drummer beats his skins, then acoustic guitars enter the mix followed by trumpet hits and analogue synthwork - great stuff. twenty knifes finish the album with an upbeat melodic glitch fest. all in all this compilation offers us a very wide selection of what hymen records has to offer. the broad range of the tracks makes for a varied listening experience but on the downside i noticed that on repeated listens i tended to skip a few tracks in order to stay in one vibe. "miwak 12" clearly shows that hymen is at the top of their game and still has plenty of quality electronic music for us in store. (tijs ham)

premonition
(bertrand hamonou)

chain d.l.k.
if a label reaches the target to survive 12 years as an active outlet for intelligent electronica music, then this has to celebrated. the whole chain d.l.k. team congrats the hymen records label to its 12th birthday and is proud to get invited. according to this happening and to celebrate this event with the listeners, hymen has released the right gift. ”miwak twelve” is the name of this double-cd compilation, which features mostly new and unreleased tracks of the projects out of the label roster, as well as of some contributions by guests of the famous partner-label ant-zen and from several other resources, which are standing in one or another relation to the label. see the full tracklist below and chose your favorite, as this compilation offers quality only. i therefore pick up only a few contributors, which left the most impression. already the opener of cd1, created by the german project the empath, impresses with some spacey synth pads and tasteful idm-related percussion inserts. somatic response out of wales are a real institution for hymen and active since the beginning of the label. they offer with ”takayama (another rainy day)” energetic electro bass lines and a hard-hitting rhythm work. female mistress tonikom offers interesting bass lines integrated in a break-beat firework. black lung is a project by the well-known australian sound-wizard david thrussel (snog), who offers here a striking and straight-forward moving noisy tune. hpc out of norway offers the right balance between harsh noise percussion elements and a well-thought form of industrial ambience. access to arasaka, well, we’ve reached one of my personal favorites during the last months offers an older tune originally released on the netlabel illphabetik, about with the same intense sci-fi feeling well presented on the marvelous full-length album ”oppidan”, out on tympanik and spectraliquid. not to forget dryft, the sole effort by the former gridlock-member mike cadoo – somehow his synth layer programming offers a lot of similarities to his unfortunately too early gone cult project. quite a lot of well-done works for cd1, but cd2 shouldn’t stand in the shadow. combustion is a brazilian project and convinces with an interesting sound-design, plus some decent female vocal contributions by caro roth. snog a.k.a. david thrussel gets the expected additional free slot and performs his inimitable ”the end of the world”. the canadian sound-designer of blackfilm manages still a lot, to hide himself from the audience, but since his scary ambient music with its dramatic orchestral inserts are sort of a lecture of ”how-to-produce-opulent-arranged-film-scores”, i see myself quite fascinated by the audio result – who cares, who’s standing behind this project? the ab ovo-musician jérôme chassagnard shakes with ”time traveller” another superb tune easily out of his wrist, which fascinates with a famous synth-play. and mika goedrijk hasn’t to be missed, since his last ep on ant-zen was a marvelous output – ”sore eyes” stands rather more for his darker and lesser aggressive side of his straight-oriented tunes. also marching dynamics a.k.a. shane talada drops an ”almighty bomb”, until the classic hands-recording act orphx lead us into their monotonous, quite klinik-like sounding analog-produced electronic ambience music. dead hollywood stars need to be mentioned too, since the legendary mr. john sellekaers (metarc studios) stands behind this project – you’ll get it, he of course has also done the mastering of this dcd compilation. and if some of you out there still have doubts, that 12 years in this shark-driven music business aren’t reason enough to celebrate this with a compilation – well, try yourself to survive with a related project a single year! and be assured, that the hymen/ant-zen clan will find enough good reasons to return with a similar impressive compilation to their 15th year of existence. let’s move on!
